What You Can Do

Simple things that you can do to protect the Great Lakes:

  • Get to know your Great Lake – go for a walk on the beach
  • Use latex paint instead of oil-based paint where appropriate
  • Turn off the water or lights when not in use
  • Let your garden and lawn grow naturally
  • Drive your car less
  • Participate in a beach cleanup
  • Choose products packaged in recycled or recyleable materials
  • Fix that oil leak in your car
  • Plant a tree
  • Dispose of fishing bait properly
  • Do not release non-native fish or plants
  • Clean and dry all fishing tackle, boats and equipment to avoid the spread of diseases and invasive species between bodies of water.
