Welcome Science Institute Educators!
Due to icy conditions, the May 4 research cruise has been postponed.
The rescheduled date is Saturday, May 31st.
We are excited to be able to offer a rescheduled research cruise for May 31, 2014 on Large Lakes Observatory’s research vessel, the R/V Blue Heron. There will still be two cruises available that day. Please plan to meet at Great Lakes Aquarium just prior to the stated start time. Travel to the R/V Blue Heron’s dock on Park Point has been factored into the schedule.
Please select your choice of cruise in the form below. If either cruise works for you, please select that option. We may need to move folks around a bit depending on interest. When the vessel is on Lake Superior, it will take a minimum of 45 minutes to return to the dock. Please take this into consideration when opting to board the Blue Heron.
- Morning cruise: 6:30 am – 12:15 pm
- Afternoon cruise: 11:30 am – 5:15 pm
On the cruise, teachers will use scientific sampling equipment to collect and examine water, plankton and sediment samples. A biologist, geologist and field technicians will be on board to share research stories and guide group investigations. Participants will also receive a complete tour of the research vessel and meet its crew. There will also be time for simply experiencing a sail on Lake Superior.
Lunch and light refreshments will be served on both cruises. Dietary restrictions will be accommodated.
Please respond by Saturday, May 17th to confirm your availability to join us on board the day of the cruise. You will receive an email confirming your cruise time and additional instructions (e.g. schedule of events, wear sunscreen, bring a mug) by Wednesday May 21st from firstname.lastname@example.org
The planning team and crew of the R/V Blue Heron will also make the decision about whether the May 31 cruise will take place 48 hours prior to sailing. That information will be shared via email, posted on the Great Lakes Aquarium website and available by calling the Aquarium at 218-740-3474 ext. 0.
We look forward to seeing you on board!
