SCUBA camp

July 26th - 29th, 2010

Discover the world of underwater science during Great Lakes Aquarium's SCUBA Camp. This action-packed week will open new windows into underwater living with hands-on explorations through Great Lakes Aquarium and submersion in local inland waters. Campers will be supervised by and receive instruction in entry level dive techniques and equipment from veteran divers and a PADI certified divemaster. A swim test is required for participation.

YOUNG WOMEN IN SCIENCE PROGRAM

Dive into the world of science at Great Lakes Aquarium with our new Young Women In Science program! Classes are for girls in grades 2nd-5th and will be held on Mondays from June through August.  Join us for arts and crafts, games, science experiments, and aquarium exploration. Bring a friend or come to make new ones! Pre-registration is required, so please contact Jillian Godfrey at

Weather affects us all.  Learn how to predict it before it arrives!  Take a closer look at clouds, pressure systems, precipitation, and the tools used to better understand weather wonders. 

 

Environmental Health

There are many things that we can do to protect and conserve our environment.  From high in the sky to deep under water, explore the world of conservation and learn simple things you can do to help.

Put on your lab coats and safety goggles to explore the world of science! Get your hands wet exploring a local stream, collect insects, create chemical reactions and learn how to perform some amazing water tricks!

From plants to animals, wildlife can be found in every part of the world.  Join us to observe animals firsthand and explore their part in our local and global community.

  

July 5th

Earth Connections

You will uncover the many layers of an ecosystem right outside our doors.  Identify trees and figure out how old they are. Learn about how people have used plants throughout time.  Think of the earth as one huge ecosystem and explore what we can do to help it.

 

Plants & Animals

Plants and animals play a huge role in our lives.  Learn about plants by planting flowers and getting a close look at their seeds.  Observe animals up-close and uncover their amazing adaptations.

 

July 12th

Water Wonders

Become a Water Wonders Explorer and embark on the incredible journey of water!  Search the Aquarium for all sorts of aquatic life, become part of the water cycle, discover ways we can protect our water resources and more!

 

Rocks Rock

Become a rock hound as you search for Lake Superior’s stones!  Act out the geologic history of Lake Superior in our geo-theater, learn how rocks are formed, what they are made of and how to identify them.

Watching Wildlife

The best way to learn about wild animals in your neighborhood is to watch them.  Discover animal architecture, communication, and menus as we observe the many signs that wildlife leave right outside our door.

 

Plants

Did you know that a seed is a baby plant waiting patiently to grow?  Peek inside a seed and set up a race to see which sprouts first.  Create your own art by rubbing tree bark and see how stealthy you can be on a leaf hunt.

 

August 9th

Earth & Sky

Let the winds of Lake Superior whisk you into this exploration of our planet! From the clouds in the sky to the rocks at our feet, girls will make discoveries up, down and all-around. Experiment with erosion, classify clouds and find out why rocks rock in this hands-on workshop.

 

Animals

Come explore the world of animals at Great Lakes Aquarium! Girls discover the unique animal adaptations, prepare a meal just for some fish and practice leaping like a frog!

 

August 16th

Senses

Can fish smell underwater? How do they see without goggles? Come find out as we compare our senses to those of fish.  We will also use our senses to explore what makes water good to drink.  Discover the different ways fish use their sense at Great Lakes Aquarium.

 

Colors & Shapes

Did you know that color and shape help animals hide, hunt and survive?  Dive into our Masters of Disguise exhibit and see first-hand how animals use color and shape.   Demonstrate your new knowledge with artwork of many colors, shapes, and textures. 

 

August 23rd

Water Everywhere

Water is everywhere–in the lake, in our food and even in our bodies! Girls will learn the wonders of water both in the environment and themselves. Learn a secret way to spy in the water without getting wet, search for the small critters that live in our lake and conduct science experiments with H20!

 

Eco-Explorer

Join us to become a troop of Eco-Explorers in search of healthy habitats. Go on a scavenger hunt around the Aquarium searching for clues on how plants and animals live together, find out who eats who in an underwater food web, and build a bird feeder to take home!

 

                                                                               
CUB SCOUTS AT THE AQUARIUM 

Join us this summer on Tuesdays for Cub Scout programming.  Come with a friend or your entire den to play games, meet new friends, and explore Great Lakes Aquarium while earning your Cub Scout credits.

Colors, Sounds, and Treats!

How do animals use color and sound to survive?  We will experiment with color mixing, instrument making, and see first hand how the animals at Great Lakes Aquarium use color and sound in their own unique ways.  We’ll also look outside for signs of animals in the harbor and construct bird feeders to bring home for the feathered friends in your backyard.

Slime and Snacks

Some frogs can jump up to 20 times their body length!  Do you think you can?  Come take a closer look at the world of amphibians.  Witness why they are so special, learn their calls, and meet the many amphibians here at Great Lakes Aquarium.  On this day we will also be exploring food.  Make a snack for yourself and for our animals.  Go behind the scenes to see how all the aquarium animals are fed.

Did you know that there are 312 different species of birds that live in Minnesota?  Go birding indoors with a guarantee that you will find what you are looking for.  Get a close look at birds that may live right outside your door and investigate their survival techniques.  We will also explore the life of plants.  Discover best way to grow plants, plant a mystery seed to see what it grows into, and get a up-close view on actual carnivorous plants!

Hook, Line and Sinker

What better place to learn about fishing than at Great Lakes Aquarium, home to over 100 species of fish!  We will find out who’s who, examine the habitats they live in, and go fishing right off of the harbor pier.  Where would fishing be without knots?  Learn the ropes of knot tying and show off your new skills at home.

Let’s go on a special bird watching adventure!  Explore how once-wild birds behave in their life-like habitats.  Discover why birds’ feet and beaks look the way they do, pioneer the trials of bird migration, and bank some identification skills.  Take a closer look and you may be deceived.  What looks like a leaf is actually a bug!  See for yourself how some animals are experts of camouflage in our new Masters of Disguise exhibit.  Create your own disguise to blend in.

Water, Water Everywhere

Is soil washing into rivers really a form of pollution?  Come investigate the ways we affect our watershed and ways that we can help.  Check out a local wetland and learn how it cleans our waters.  We will explore water on the ground and in the air.
What causes fog?  Why does it seem to rain for days, while other days it storms?  Explore the wonders of weather!

The Chain of Life

Become a bird expert as we investigate the behavior of our feathered friends.  Start inside observing Great Lakes Aquarium’s birds and search for birds out in the harbor.  How many can you find?  We will also dive in and explore the ecosystems some birds are a part of.  Take a plankton sample out on the harbor and see these tiny creatures with your own eyes.  Though they are small, they are a key link in the food chain.

August 24th

Poison and Plants

What’s wrong with poison?  See how many plants and animals use poison to their advantage right here in Minnesota.  Learn to identify them and meet the Great Lakes Aquarium poison dart frogs.  Did you know that a wetland acts like a filter for our water?  Explore the benefits of wetlands and the animals that call them home.

Overnight
Date: September 1st and 2nd

Price: $30/Scout, $10/Chaperone (Required: At least one adult per 5 Scouts)

Calling all Cub Scouts that are seeking a one of a kind indoor camping adventure!  A whole new world of wonders comes alive at Great Lakes Aquarium during the night hours.  Tiger Cubs through Webelos are invited to join us for a night of scouting station activities.  Go behind the scenes to follow a drop of water though the Aquarium life-support system, husbandry kitchen, and animal holding, and wrap up the night by rolling out their sleeping bags to the sound of the rushing water.
