Mudpuppy

Necturus maculosus

Physical features:
8 to 13 inches long with gray, brown or black coloration, blue-black spotting, and large maroon external gills. They have a flat head, short tail, and four well developed limbs.

Habitat:
Rivers, weedy ponds, lakes

Diet:
Crayfish, insects, fish, worms, snails.

Fun facts:
Mudpuppies are neotenic (permanent larvae) and keep their external gills throughout life.
