Paddlefish
Polyodon spathula
Physical features: Dark gray-black fish with paddle-like snout and large toothless jaws. Generally lacking scales.
Habitat: Pre-historically found in Great Lakes region. Currently found in slow moving river systems in the central US.
Diet: Plankton.
Fun facts: Filter feeds by drawing water across the gills and straining out microscopic plankton. No other fish in North America resembles the Paddlefish.
