New River Otters

Meet Agate and Ore.

A pair of playful, energetic North American river otters are recent arrivals to Great Lakes Aquarium.  Here they will serve as our resident otter ambassadors.

The otters came from Louisiana where they were rescued from live traps.  Otters are routinely trapped in that region and other parts of the country where they are considered nuisance animals.  Since they were not able to be released back into the wild they came to live here.

Both otters appear to be young.  A vet exam on one of the otters recently determined that we have a female who is approximately 1 1/2 years old.  An exam on the second otter is expected soon.

Thank you to all who participated in our Name the Otter Polling Event.  Nearly 5,000 votes were cast!
