Lake Superior Series

Discover the forces that formed Lake Superior, the wildlife that calls the lake home, the unique value of its freshwater resources, and the lake’s role in the region’s human history and culture.

Included Content:

  • Lake Superior Ecology Class: Explore a Lake Superior food chain, learn how plankton samples are collected, and view living plankton under a microscope. (Includes a 30-minute video lesson, a follow-along worksheet and a teacher answer key)
  • Lake Superior Geology Class: If you know what to listen and look for, rocks can tell all kinds of stories. What are they made of, and how do they form? How can you tell them apart? (Includes a 20-minute video lesson, a follow-along worksheet and a teacher answer key).
    Each student will need drawing materials and a blank sheet of paper to shred during the video lesson.
  • Water on the Move Class: Water is always moving – through rivers and streams, precipitation, the air, and the ground – all over the world! (Includes a 20-minute video lesson, a follow-along worksheet, and a teacher answer key)
  • Wild Rice Detectives Class: Discover the role of native wild rice in the Lake Superior region’s ecology, history, and culture, then solve a real-life wild rice mystery. (Includes a 20-minute video lesson, a follow-along worksheet, and a teacher answer key)

Creature Feature Series

Explore the differences and similarities between vertebrates (and invertebrates!) across the animal kingdom.

Included Content:

  • Fish Lesson: A 14-minute video lesson about animals that breathe through gills and lay eggs.
  • Mammals Lesson: A 12-minute video lesson about animals that have fur or hair, give live birth, nurse their young, and keep their own bodies warm.
  • Birds Lesson: A 10-minute video lesson about animals that have feathers and lay eggs.
  • Reptiles Lesson: An 11-minute video lesson about animals that have scaly bodies and lay eggs.
  • Amphibians Lesson: An 11-minute video lesson about animals that have slimy skin and transition from life in water to life on land during their lives.
  • Invertebrates Lesson: An 18-minute video lesson about animals that have no backbone at all!

Live Programs

Schedule a private live animal encounter or class for your group — all over Zoom or Google Meet! Our experienced educators have been perfecting their virtual teaching styles and are excited to share their expertise and enthusiasm for the natural world.

Price:

  • 1 – 30 participants: $50.00
  • 31 – 50 participants: $60.00
  • 51 – 100 participants: $80.00

Duration: 45 minutes

Class Options:

Lake Superior Ecology (All Ages): Explore a Lake Superior food chain, learn how plankton samples are collected, and view living plankton under a microscope.

Fantastic Frogs (PreK – 2nd Grade): Hop, Jump, Plop! Frogs are fantastic with their slimy skin and water ways. Learn to sing like a frog, practice your jumping, and learn about their unique, changing life.

Animal Encounter (All Ages): Meet an animal that calls Great Lakes Aquarium home! Our educators will introduce a live skunk, snake, alligator, or turtle and investigate the adaptations that make that creature unique.

Scheduling: Live virtual field trips are available Monday – Friday. Please schedule at least a week in advance.
