Women in Science is a series of events hosted by Great Lakes Aquarium aimed at supporting local female scientists fighting to make our community a better place with their passionate work, every day.
Women in Science: The Forecast Forum

Great Lakes Aquarium is excited to partner with WDIO News for a highly-anticipated forecast forum! The free, after-hours event will focus on getting into meteorology as women in a male-dominated field, detailing how meteorologists forecast, and exploring both the broadcast and government career paths.
Guests are invited to explore the Aquarium’s exhibit floor before and after presentations.

Name: Sabrina Ullman
Title: WDIO Weekend Meteorologist / Multimedia Journalist
Field: Meteorology
Sabrina Ullman an AMS-Certified Meteorologist on WDIO, bringing expertise in a variety of weather phenomenon to the Northland. She joined the Storm Track Weather Team in May 2021 after graduating from the University of Miami with a B.S. in Meteorology and Broadcast Journalism and a math minor.
In addition to forecasting on weekends and when needed as a fill-in Meteorologist during the week, Sabrina is a Senior Multimedia Journalist. She shoots, writes, and edits most of her news stories and shares her expertise with newer reporters. She enjoys being a “one-woman-band” and has earned an Emmy nomination and multiple Sevareid awards for her work. Sabrina’s favorite news stories tend to be those that involve scientific reporting and getting out in nature. This has included a variety of interesting adventures, from exploring peatlands to seeing the inside of a wolf den.
Sabrina is originally from Florida and lived in Tennessee for the second half of her childhood before going to college in Miami. She decided to be a meteorologist at the age of four and has been in several hurricanes, from the four that made landfall in Lakeland, FL in the summer of 2004 to Hurricane Irma in 2017. Despite the warm weather background, Sabrina thrives in winter forecasting and takes pride in forecast accuracy and adequately preparing Northlanders for incoming storms. Outside of work, she enjoys playing ultimate frisbee, going on hikes, and spending time with her pup, Luna Belle.
Name: Lea Zmurko
Title: WDIO Storm Track Meteorologist / Good Morning Northland
Field: Meteorology
Lea Zmurko is the morning Meteorologist for Good Morning Northland on WDIO, bringing bright energy and clear forecasting to viewers across the region. She joined the Storm Track Weather Team in June 2024 after graduating from Penn State University with a degree in Meteorology and Atmospheric Science, where she also gained experience with the National Weather Service and multiple student forecasting programs.
Since arriving in the Twin Ports, Lea has embraced life by Lake Superior and the challenge of forecasting the Northland’s ever‑changing conditions. Her ability to blend science, communication, and community storytelling earned her an Emmy nomination for Stoked for Snow. A series exploring outdoor winter adventure and how our community embraces the cold all across the region.
Originally from Vermont, Lea’s passion for weather is rooted in snow science and the environmental impacts of winter tourism. Lea has been a lifelong skier, racer, and coach, and continues her passion for winter sports by helping with Team Duluth’s race programs. Whether she’s forecasting or carving turns, Lea is committed to connecting people with the science of the atmosphere and celebrating the places shaped by it.

Admission and parking is free for event guests during this event.
Cash or credit accepted in the gift store and at the bar. Guests must be 21+ to consume alcohol.

Starting at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 16th, Great Lakes Aquarium will be offering complimentary parking TO EVENT GUESTS ONLY.
Overflow parking is available next door at the Duluth Entertainment Convention Center. Standard rates apply for DECC parking.
