Sensory-Friendly Experiences

Great Lakes Aquarium is an energetic, colorful place full of sensory stimuli, and we know this environment can be overwhelming for some explorers! The Aquarium strives to provide a positive, welcoming experience for every visitor.

Calm Waters: Sensory Friendly Days

Great Lakes Aquarium is excited to partner with organizations looking to bring a group of visitors who would benefit from a calmer environment, limited sensory stimulation or other specific accommodations. To select a date and plan a Calm Waters event for your group, contact Director of Learning and Engagement Alexis Berke at (218) 740 – 2013 or aberke@glaquarium.org.

Planning a visit with friends, family or on your own? Our staff can suggest times of day and days of the week that tend to be less busy. Our goal is to be accessible to all and we are happy to hear your ideas for adapting spaces and experiences to better serve you. Contact Director of Learning and Engagement Alexis Berke at (218) 740 – 2013 or aberke@glaquarium.org.

Normal admission rates apply – members always free!**

Social Narrative

While we work to mitigate the spread of COVID-19, the Aquarium experience may look a little different than the way it’s outlined in the social narrative. For guidance in preparing for your Aquarium visit, please feel free to contact Interim Director of Learning and Engagement Alexis Berke at aberke@glaquarium.org.

Created in collaboration with the Autism Society of Minnesota (AuSM), this guide helps visitors reduce their anxiety about new experiences by explaining what to expect step-by-step as they explore the Aquarium.

*If you find the Aquarium’s social narrative helpful, check out other social narratives from AuSM!

We know everyone’s Aquarium experience is unique. For more information on these resources or on customizing your sensory-friendly Aquarium experience, contact Director of Learning and Engagement Alexis Berke at (218) 740 – 2013 or aberke@glaquarium.org.
