Hand-carved wooden relief pieces that capture Lake Superior’s power and iconic species are on display in Great Lakes Aquarium’s Merrill Lynch Fine Arts Gallery through September 2. The exhibition Beneath the Surface: An Exploration of Lake Superior features the work of North Shore resident and contemporary artist Justin Dallas. It builds upon a prior series devoted to fish of the Knife River.
An opening reception will be held on Saturday, June 8 from 1 to 3pm with light refreshments and an opportunity to meet the artist. The art gallery is free and open to the public.
“I’m excited to continue connecting people with the sense of awe and wonder that is discovered in wild places,” said Dallas, who received a grant from the Arrowhead Regional Arts Council to develop the new series. “These perspective-shifting experiences can be life changing; however, they often dissolve as we reenter the hustle and bustle of our everyday lives.”
